Smokane – Spokane, WA

Smokane opened its doors in the Spring of 2014 with its first iteration of the shop having  been tucked away in a dingy industrial area past Spokane’s railroad tracks. This punny named pot shop moved to a more accessible location the following year, but not before eight months of pushing the city council to relax their rules on cannabis retailer buffer zones. Smokane is now easily visible on a main street, with large windows and bright outdoor lights. There’s enough parking near the store that shy customers can leave their cars out of public view, though the décor is designed to put them at ease, with ample room to browse products before making a purchase or asking for a recommendation at the central counter.

The People

The new location’s extra space allowed husband-and-wife owners Jay and Sothy Low to expand Smokane to two shops—the pot shop itself, plus an accessory retailer next door, offering bongs and other glassware, as well as souvenir mugs and T-shirts. “Basically, anything you can get in an airport gift shop,” offers Sothy Low. After the passage of I-502, she and Jay moved to Spokane specifically to get involved in the fledgling new industry, motivated by a belief in cannabis’ medical applications. “Jay also happens to be born on 4/20, so it was just kind of meant to be,” Low jokes.

The Product

They used established connections with friends working in cannabis production and processing to fill out around 40 percent of Smokane’s product inventory; the remainder is defined by customer demand, with consideration towards quality and value for flower, edibles and concentrates. To top it all off, Smokane offers a rotating slate of special deals from processors like Cowlitz Cannabis, who use top-shelf flower and minimal packaging to reduce costs, as well as standard discounts for cannabis industry employees, army veterans and customers signed up for their free loyalty rewards program.
