Northern Emeralds – Humboldt, CA
Cody Stross is the son of a Formula One race car driver, leading a passionate team of 100 Northern Emeralds artisanal cultivators and manicurists, customer service concierge, drivers, club relationship managers and a select syndicate of independent Humboldt craft cultivators. Northern Emeralds is California’s finest purveyor of craft cannabis, the resulting blend of scientific methods and data-based cultivation, an industry-leading, quantitative 12-point grading system brought to life through true Humboldt artisanal craftsmen. Chairman of the Humboldt County Growers Alliance, Cody founded Northern Emeralds in 2014 as a permitted medical cannabis cultivator, which was recently awarded the first recreational cannabis permit in Arcata.
Walking through Northern Emeralds’ grow rooms, rich pine and lemon terpenes fill the air. Clean and effective, Northern Emeralds grows indoor-only for stringent quality control. They mitigate their carbon footprint by sourcing renewable energy in Humboldt, utilizing a system that can recapture 90 percent of water usage. Cannabis is inspected and categorized into tiers; each specialist is trained to smell for molds and mildews, as well as check for visual imperfections so the specimen can be cleared before hitting the lab.
Since its inception, Northern Emeralds has had over 400 harvests, and California’s finest quantitative graders painstakingly inspect and rate each one. “Our mission has been to hit the Platinum ($3200) and Gold ($3000) standard constantly,” Stross tells me, “and when the stars align, Private Reserve, which fetches over $3800 per pound.” Terpene profile defines their famous Titan OG: “We give our artisanal craftsmen a strain to see if they can bring out the perfect expression of that phenome,” Stross explains. “We call it the truest ‘intent of the seed.’”Quality expectations parallel the finest Bordeaux and Napa Valley wines. With a holistic approach, Northern Emeralds are the Master Sommeliers of craft cannabis.
