Hawg’s Breath Company: Growing for a Green Angel

On a four-acre farm an hour northeast of San Diego, Hawg’s Breath Company grows cannabis under the bright Southern California sun. Lisa Marie, more commonly known as Mama Love, and her husband, Ickabod, have been growing cannabis for over 30 years, the last 16 on their inland, county property. The duo started growing hydroponically, but as cannabis has become more accepted, they have been transitioning to a no-till outdoor grow. Past their orchard of Valencia Oranges, four outdoor greenhouses shelter the sticky green bounty inside. The greenhouses allow the couple to control sunlight through light deprivation, which increases flower production.

“We want to be transparent because it was something we never could be, to connect with people and be a community. We do it for the love of the plant and the patient.”

Mama Love and Ickabod started growing cannabis with her brother and his best friend, James the Hanger. James, who officiated their wedding, also bred the popular indica strain Hawg’s Breath, for which the company is named. When James died of a heart attack in his garden 6 years ago, Mama Love and Ickabod discussed how best to honor him: “We were a dream team, we had to come out of isolation; we needed to mourn the loss of our best friend with the greater cannabis community.”

Mama Love calls her brother her “green angel,” and they started Hawg’s Breath Company in 2016 in James’ memory. Mama Love says, “We’re on a mission to create the cleanest medicine possible with lowest overhead. We want to be transparent because it was something we never could be, to connect with people and be a community. We do it for the love of the plant and the patient.”

Aside from their namesake Hawg’s Breath, Hawg’s Breath Company also grows Icka OG and Lemon Larry OG, which won the Silver Cup Indica Flower at the Chalice Cup 2015. The company makes t-shirts and other apparel, as well as Mama Love’s famous Sap-Off Hand Scrub, made with hemp oil, raw sugar, and peppermint oil, to give your kitchen sink a resin-dissolving spa treatment.
