The future of cannabis is female! December is DOPE Magazine’s Women’s Issue, and we wanted to continue to highlight women across the industry on all our platforms. We sent a questionnaire to outstanding women in cannabis—some familiar to us, some new—and will be showcasing their answers in individual blogs this month. Check out our December Mag for more profiles of the badass women you need to know! Today’s story highlights Elyse Gordon, Owner/CFO of Better Baked, LLC.
Q: Who are some of your greatest role models?
A: My parents…they are the total bomb! I have so much respect for them and what they have taught me over my lifetime.
Q: What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career?
A: The financial drain, and the unbelievable duplication of rules and changes in the cannabis industry.
Q: What’s something someone would never guess about you?
A: I am a jazz vocalist and do stand-up comedy.
Q: Favorite “guilty pleasure”?
A: Anything crunchy to eat.
Q: How do you feel about the industry-wide assertion that cannabis is a female-friendly space?
A: I agree that it has become a female-dominated business, and maybe that is because I believe women are nurturers and naturally drawn to healing, so it is becoming a strong, female-driven industry. Not that we don’t still have to deal with the Boys Club attitude when it comes to investors.
Q: As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Successful in whatever I took on.
Q: If you could talk to yourself five years ago, what advice would you give?
A: Follow your head and heart…keep up your hustle, and don’t be taken advantage of.
Q: What advice do you have for other women looking to get into the cannabis space?
A: Be very aware of who you get into business with, because the cannabis space has created a “shark-feeding” environment. Make sure everything you do is in writing.
Q: Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
A: “Nobody goes broke from small profits.” Also, “Bite off only what you can chew so you won’t choke on it.”
Q: What’s your favorite cannabis product? (And you can’t list one of your own, if you’re a grower/producer!)
Q: What’s the one thing you would bring if you were stranded on a desert island?
Q: What do you hope for the future of the cannabis industry?
A: That the plant is hailed as the most valuable natural resource we could ever imagine. This plant has the ability to heal the sick and be an industrial treasurer.
Q: What do you think needs to happen before we achieve federal legalization of cannabis?
A: Continue to educate the masses, most importantly. The more people understand the benefits of the cannabis plant, the more they’ll be inclined to help support the cause.
Q: What’s your smoking/cannabis consumption ritual, if you do partake in cannabis?
A: Roll me a nice big blunt…give me a sunny sky…sit outside…life is good!
