Bull Run Craft Cannabis
The farm at Bull Run Craft Cannabis is a busy place, and has been for quite a long time! Starting out life as a tulip producer in the 1960s, the farm made over $50 million in flower sales worldwide. Fast forward to 2016, the farm has once again focused their sights on producing the best flowers, albeit now on ones poised for the Oregon Rec Market. The farm is a Tier II-licensed grow, as well as a fully functional organic produce producer, a Greyhound rescue and even a functional turf landing strip for airplanes. Both the cannabis and the organic farm have been blessed with the Certified Kind Standard, which ensures all products are grown according to the highest organic growing practices.
I first met two of the Bull Run owners during a benefit concert for the dog shelter on their property. EZ Mike and Big Steve are neighbors who started growing for the medical program early in Oregon’s cannabis experiment and found great success. With the addition of John Plummer, owner of the Doug Fir Restaurant and Lounge in Portland, EZ Mike and Big Steve found the missing component to take their farm to the next level.
The facility itself is impressive. The farm once supplied the world with tulips, and all those old growth timber buildings used for flower refrigeration were still there when the remodel started. Turns out the insulated reefers were perfect for controlling the room temperature. At the time of our visit, they had just completed a few modifications that will allow them to increase overall production without increasing their environmental footprint. That brings them up to almost three pounds of cannabis per light fixture, harvested every three weeks! “It’s very important to us that we grow the best cannabis we can, while making the least impact on the environment [as] possible,” shares EZ Mike. “I don’t think we’ll ever be done improving on that.”
Near the end of our tour, we sat and passed the pipe around, eagerly taking in the fruits of the farm and swapping stories. My favorite strain had to be their Starkiller, a potent indica that pairs well with summer days, new friends and happy dogs playing in a pile. I can’t wait to visit them again soon!
