Prank Bar – Los Angeles, CA
Prank Bar is one of Downtown Los Angeles’ newest spots to get a drink, billing itself as the “newest locale for drinks and merriment in Downtown L.A.’s bourgeoning South Park neighborhood.” Built on the foundation of a bar that beckons to and ingratiates passersby, owner and founder Dave Whitton says he wants to foster a community atmosphere around Downtown…and it seems to be working. Claiming the rights to “L.A.’s first walk-up bar” in the New Orleans-tradition, Prank Bar is perfectly poised to take advantage of what many are calling a renaissance of Downtown’s nightlife.
The bar’s menu features a variety of vegan-friendly options, utilizing aquafaba as a clever substitute for egg whites. And, oh yeah…some of their drinks have cannabis terpenes. These extracted oils are devoid of THC, instead offering the myriad health benefits of its non-psychoactive cousin, CBD. Other drinks, including a line of house kombuchas, cater to guests who may not wish to imbibe. The anti-inflammatory “Augmented Ambrosia” that I tried contained limonene, a terpene that is said to enhance memory, but the added tequila may have thwarted this benefit.
The spirit that permeates the bar is a mischievous but good-natured pursuit of the “infinite goof.” From the jester logo emblazoned on the shirts of the staff to the karaoke booth that can, at any time (and unbeknownst to the singer) be broadcast throughout the bar, Prank Bar has both the menu and atmosphere to ensure a packed house night after night.
