Legendary Laboratories – Spokane, WA
In just over a year, Legendary Laboratories in Spokane, Washington, has gone from a dream and a floor plan to a licensed, Tier II producer/processor. They’re a small, tenacious family business that offers 42 strains (and counting) of pesticide-free flower and solventless extracts.
Legendary Labs is an all-indoor hydroponic facility that prides itself on being pesticide-free, using predatory mites to control pests. “We believe if it’s something humans consume, it should be completely natural,” says General Manager Cody Payne. “If you’re going to have a cancer-fighting plant, it makes no sense to spray it with carcinogenic pesticides!” The team’s passion comes from a background in medical marijuana. But in order to switch to recreational and compete in the industry, they had to make a few changes—like constructing and dialing in a hydroponic system that could handle their many strains. This proved a challenge, but in the end, it allowed them to compete in the recreational market with faster growth and more potent buds.
The Legendary Labs team did all of that hard work themselves. “We built everything—even the walls—with our own bare hands,” Cody says. They’re a tight-knit group of family and long-time friends. Cody’s cousin, Dillon, is the owner; his grandmother is the treasurer; and his closest friends since the first grade help manage and run the operation. The business employs ten people, including the management. They prefer to keep it small and focused on the passion. Cody says they’re not in it for the money, which is evident in the two years the team spent working seven days a week—without return—to build the business.
Legendary Labs prides itself on its strain selection, which comes from seed breeding and pheno-hunting. Some of Cody’s favorites are Grandpa’s Breath, by Dungeon Vault Genetics; Sour Dosidos, by Dank Genetics; Flubber, by La Plata Labs; and their own Razzberry Kush. Their processing side is equally exciting. “We do a lot of rosin and solventless extraction,” Cody says. “No Butane. Low temperature. Nice, high-grade, tasty, terpy oil.” Having only been licensed since March 10, 2017, Legendary Labs’ biggest challenge has been establishing their brand in the already crowded Washington market. But with their drive and ambition, they’ll have no problem standing out as a premier cannabis cultivator. Their vision: “We want to be talked about in the 2100s for our hard work and high-quality cannabis.”
