EVENT RECAP: Dope Cup 2017 Washington

By: Shontelle Reyna

DOPE Cup Washington, Presented by Ionic Vape has raised the bar for cannabis competitions year after year. Higher standards, higher expectations, and classically high guests made for the cannabis event of the year. We couldn’t have done it without our treasured supporting sponsors, Diego Pelicer, Dockside Cannabis, Blaze Cola and Stoney Mountain Root Beer, Herban Legends, Smokey Point Productions and Weedmaps. DOPE Cup elevates every aspect of the budding industry, from the novice consumer to the creative producers of each innovative new cannabis product. This year’s VIP attendees were gifted with a bag filled with dope swag as soon as they entered the event. The VIP lounge, powered by Grasshopper Hub was furnished with an array of comfortable seating and arcade games available only to them. Terra Helm Catering satiated their cravings with a spread fit for the cannabis Kings and Queens they were. Conveniently located stage right so that if they did not want to leave the cozy lounge to see the performances they didn’t have to.

Of course DOPE had to let those who entered their products into this year’s event know that they too are very important people. This year’s Growers Lounge sponsored by MJ Freeway was lit, in every sense of the word. Walking by you may have caught a bit of a contact high if you hadn’t lit up already. The lounge itself was loaded with munchies and drinks as well as a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere out of the rain.

Seattle is no stranger to the phrase “April showers bring may flowers.” Rain and shine, the event blazed on for all attendees with great food, rows of games to feed the inner child in all of us and an abundance of booths in the Vendor Village from Washington’s favorite cannabis companies, all excited to share their products and exercise their expertise, educating every person on the new products available. Big Boy’s Filipino Food Truck (who happens to have a sandwich named after CEO and Co-owner of DOPE Magazine, Dave Tran. Try the Tranimal!), Creole Soul food from Where Ya At Matt, and healthy eats from Island Blends Acai, were a few of the food options available to curb those hunger pains after getting your game on killing zombies in virtual reality, putting the pedal to the medal in the NASCAR racing games or breaking a sweat in any number of the old-school arcade games.

If arcade games aren’t your jam and you’re looking for a little more “adult” entertainment the lineup was on point. The day started out with DJ Cide on the decks feeding the crowd classic hip hop joints from the jump. Later, local crew Kung Foo Grip dominated the stage, followed by the one and only, Talib Kweli who surprised the crowd with an impromptu appearance by miss K’Valentine! Her smooth swagger and swift lyricism cut through the crowd like no one else could.

But the night was not over yet. The performances set the stage and atmosphere for those eager to hear the results of DOPE Cup 2017. Max Montrose of Tri-Chrome Institute opened the ceremony by giving credit where credit was due explaining, “This was an incredibly hard judging process……the winning entries were tested backwards and forwards against the most scientifically backed judging process in the country”. As we know Washington is home to some of the best flower in the country, and boasts premium concentrate, edible, topical representation. All those who entered work hard for the cannabis community and like DOPE, intend to continue to work to normalize the plant that everyone was there to celebrate.

Dope Magazine Congratulates all of the winners and runners up. Although not everyone walked away with the coveted DOPE Cup, we all walked away winners!
