THE PLACE

Amazon Organics’ Owner, Shane Cavanaugh, takes a great deal of pride in his connection with the South Eugene community. He has been living and cultivating cannabis in the area since 2001 and staying close to home was a priority when choosing a location for his dispensary. The shop, which opened in 2012 at the beginning of Oregon’s medical licensing process, has since become a community space in its own right.

Cavanaugh recently acquired an adjacent business, a popular neighborhood tavern whose owners were retiring, and converted part of it into an expanded dispensary while preserving the other part as a pub with house-smoked meats. Adding to the local ties, HiFi Music Hall, for which Amazon Organics operates an in-store box office, serves as a home base for collaboration and cross-marketing with the music industry.

THE PRODUCT

Equally thoughtful when it comes to the products on the shelves, Cavanaugh maintains high standards for the cannabis he sells. Because the operation is vertically integrated, he and his team can exercise ultimate control over their stock, and their eclectic and expansive inventory typically includes more than 42 varieties. “We specialize in rare genetics and sativas.

We have unique access to harder-to-come-by strains, like the OG Kushes and the Diesels that got a lot of people my age interested in cannabis,” Cavanaugh explained. A variety of landrace strains, including Mexican and South African cultivars, round out the flower selection. Amazon Organics also stays fully stocked on concentrates and oils, with edibles recently gaining popularity as well.

THE PEOPLE

Of all their distinctive elements though, it’s the people that make Amazon Organics truly special. Cavanaugh and his core group of managers are old friends who have been working together for almost 20 years, producing handmade products from glass art to organic cannabis.

“We’re all locals here, and we offer a different perspective on products and the explanations behind them, the stories and the lore. We’re trying to be an authentic representation of what local cannabis is supposed to be.”

It’s these mature relationships, Cavanaugh said, along with the staff’s passion and know-how, that solidify their place in Eugene’s cannabis culture: “We’re all locals here, and we offer a different perspective on products and the explanations behind them, the stories and the lore. We’re trying to be an authentic representation of what local cannabis is supposed to be.” If Amazon Organics is the industry barometer, then local cannabis is in great shape.
