Canna West Seattle
Canna West Seattle is a Zen little shop in West Seattle’s Junction neighborhood. Inside, there is a small counter and usually two or three budtenders to help customers. It can get busy, but you’ll never wait in line for more than a few minutes. Display cases on the walls are a nice touch. You can peruse the product separate from the main counter, and right at eye level. It’s a pleasant, light-hearted space—perfect for West Seattle Junction.
Founder Maryam Mirnateghi has lived in this area for a long time. She wanted to bring cannabis to West Seattle in a way that reflected the values and aesthetics of this cherished neighborhood. “I wanted the store to be an asset to the community, a trusted resource,” she says.
Maryam started in cannabis when her fiancé’s grandmother had cancer and used tinctures to ease the side effects of chemotherapy. Unable to find a good source for the tinctures, Maryam decided to do something about it. In 2010, she opened Fusion Medical Marijuana in Seattle, and with the help of a group of long-time industry veterans formed the Coalition for Cannabis Standards and Ethics. Both of these organizations helped shape medical marijuana in Washington.
Through this work, she met most of her staff, who have now been working together in cannabis for five—some of them, ten—years. At Canna, they continue the spirit of passion and compassion that made Fusion so special. “Our history proves our mission,” says Maryam. Their mission? “To be a trusted resource for information and high-quality, safe products,” she says. “And to help people understand cannabis better and make informed decisions.”
Ninety percent of Canna West Seattle’s product is top-shelf. They have great variety and offer many price points thanks to strong relationships with their vendors. “We work very closely with our vendors, and treat them like partners,” says Maryam. “Our model is different. It eats up our margin a little. Instead of driving the farmers’ prices down and charging a high markup to the customer, we work to create a sustainable solution for everyone involved, beginning with the farmers and ending with the customers.”
Customer favorites like Canna Organics, Soul Shine and Curious Crow are proudly displayed in the wall-mounted cases. On the left wall are concentrates, edibles and topicals; on the right are flower and pre-rolls. Maryam personally tests every product that comes her way, and, when necessary, works with vendors to make improvements. By taking responsibility for the product, and for the customer’s experience, Canna West Seattle embodies their mission.
