About The Mom: Lynn Bakeman is the mom of a 23-year-old young man suffering from a “refractory” case (resistant to treatment or cure) of ulcerative colitis. UC is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the colon. Over 6 years this debilitating this disease has controlled her son’s ability to eat, sleep and engage in the life that his peers enjoy.

Stuck between allopathic medicine’s dire prediction of no cure and lifelong use of immunosuppressive drugs with potentially deadly side-effects, as well as functional medicine’s belief in ferreting out root cause to achieve remission, they turned to medical marijuana.

In her words, “Medical marijuana falls under the Hippocratic oath for me: First do no harm. I do not understand why our country has made it so hard and so illegal to benefit from this fascinating and promising medicinal plant. This blog touches on many of the issues I’ve had to address in seeking treatment for my son.”

As a lifestyle publication, DOPE Magazine is dedicated to creating purposeful, relevant conversations. When we printed our inaugural issue in 2011 we positioned ourselves in the cannabis arena as a team of professionals determined to normalize the plant. While cannabis remains the central theme of our brand, 2017 has marked a turning point in our progression. We’ve built a steadfast framework of inclusivity when speaking about gender, race, class, politics, family and culture—with the ethos DEFEND.
